Monday 20th August – Travel and Walk **** Froghall Wharfe Walk – mainly
cloudy
With no wind forecast it was a good opportunity to have a few days away in
the campervan while picking up my new Oxendon windsurfing trailer from
Cuddington near Chester. Leaving Felixstowe at 10.15 we didn’t fancy the
M6 way so went the A1( M ) seeing both the football grounds in Nottingham
while crossing the River Trent. I checked our Inlands Waterways Map of
Great Britain and found a good spot to aim for, the start of the Caldon
Canal at Froghall so we set the sat-nav which got us there after a couple
of wrong turns! We soon found a great carpark at Froghall Wharfe with no
sign saying you couldn’t stop overnight just no tents or caravans in
another car park over the road, so I think we will be OK here:) We were in
need of a cuppa and cake, recovering from the journey for a while. This is
a top spot with a nice tea room, a canal basin and a row of old lime kilns.
It is also the start of three walks, Red, Blue and Green varying in length
from 2.5 to 5 miles. So just past 5 we decided to start with a section of
the Green coming back onto the Blue. Things started well as we found the
start along the very pretty canal past some holiday cottages, then the path
heads uphill by a pond. The path climbs steeply but the Green markers soon
disappear and we missed the turning to Foxt and ended up in a field with
several race horses. We didn’t have a clue where we were even though I
had a pic of the walks on my camera! Then the farmer with his daughter
arrived to feed the horses and we had a nice chat with them. They told us
the way to go, mainly by which pub he uses:) We had to walk along a busy
road for a while until we reached Ipstones which is miles from Foxt!!! We
soon found the lane we needed which quickly turned into a path up and down
through a wooded gorge coming out at Foxt Church. Then past the pub we
found the steep but overgrown path down to Harston Woods. We got scratched
and stung ankles but there was a good crop of blackberries to eat on the
way:) Back at the van after 2 hours 15 minutes covering just over 4 miles.
It is very quiet here now and we have the carpark to ourselves, lets hope
it stays that way and tomorrow if the weather is OK we can explore the
canal on our bikes!
